Managing navigation

Once you have the basics of navigation down, it's fun to dive in to some of the more advanced settings.

  • Go to Commands > Manage nav terms
  • Click the edit link for the term you'd like to work with
  • On the Edit navigation term screen, click the "Advanced settings" link to expand that area, then the "Template settings" link to expand the template area

Advanced settings

Include in site navigation:

You can uncheck this box to hide the term completely. This is great for working on new sections before you're ready for them to go live, you'll just need to go to Commands > Manage nav terms to find them until you've made them show up again

Treat this term as a root menu item:

Typically used for microsites, the term will become the root / main navigation term when a visitor browses to it.

Restrict this term to the following roles:

This is a group of check boxes allowing you to restrict the navigation term so that only visitors with certain roles can see the term. The standard choices are Editor, Contributor, Member, and Authenticated User. Any custom roles that have been created for your site will also appear as a choice here. You can choose one or more roles.

Note that Site Admins and System Admins can see all navigation terms, regardless of any restriction set here.

Behavior(s) for unauthorized users:

This is where you set the behavior if someone tries to access the navigation term that you restricted in the previous step. You may want to select a combination of options.
  1. Deny unauthorized users. Block access to the nav term landing page, even if there is content they would be able to access. (In other words, even if you have posted non-restricted content on that landing page, people without the proper role cannot access the navigation term.)
  2. Prompt non-logged-in users to log in. Allow them to see public content, but let them know that they may want to log in see additional content. (In other words, they can get to the landing page but they'll be prompted to log in to see content.)
  3. Warn users who are logged in but do not have the qualifying roles. Notify users that this section has additional content for available to certain roles and name those roles. Good for sites that want to encourage users to attain a premium membership, or for sites that depend on users requesting access from the site administrator. Not good for sites that have members that cannot attain certain roles, because it will be reminding them that content exists which they will never be allowed to access.
  4. Hide the term from unauthorized users until they log in.
  5. Show a lock icon on the navigation term. (The term will be visible, but a lock will display. This can be used in conjunction with #1, 2 or 3.)

Custom warnings:

You can override the standard warnings with your own message in each of these boxes.

Internal name for site administrators:

You can override the internal name of the term.

Override number of posts / Override number of profiles on subterm displays:

Typically subterm displays include 3 posts and/or profiles. You can increase that by setting a different number here.

Block sorting:

You can change the standard sort criteria for the navigation term. Choices include Manually ordered, By next upcoming event date, and By next upcoming event date (this week only).

Template settings

Here you can change the display template used for this term. Note that you can also do this using the template switcher from the landing page.
